On-line Donations: You Need to Do It Now!
Jack Nelson, President of the OROS Alliance, offers best-practices tips for easy implementation of online donations.
You don't have to look further than the Obama campaign to see how strong a communications -- and fundraising -- tool the Internet is --- when used well. As many as 70+ percent of Americans are reported to be using the Internet regularly to communicate, learn, purchase, and maintain relationships. (Think how often you use the Internet!) Your nonprofit can't afford not to build a presence on this state-of-the-art information superhighway -- and be part of this significant revenue growth stream for nonprofits.
Your fellow nonprofits are already using their websites to sign up new members, conduct blogs, take surveys, educate constituents, and link to other sites. Most important, they are asking for and accepting donations online! Your own constituents may already be expecting these services from you!
In today's economic uncertainty, when traditional giving may decline, it's imperative to be able to offer the newest and easiest giving opportunities.
Current estimates indicate that more than fifty percent of online users plan to donate to a nonprofit between now and the end of the year.
Done correctly, online donations are the most efficient means for a nonprofit to receive funds. Setting up to receive online donations may seem like one of those technical hurdles you dread. But it needn't be.
With a system like GiftWorks Online Donations, your donations are processed in real time, the money is deposited into your bank account, the donor is added to your donor management system, and the donor immediately receives a custom gift acknowledgement (i.e., instant gratification). For online donations, there are none of the often-overlooked costs and delays associated with accepting cash and/or checks such as opening the mail, making a deposit slip, depositing the money at your bank, manually adding the donation to your donor management system, generating an acknowledgment letter, and dropping the letter in the mail.
Best practices for online donations:
- Your online donations page should match the look and feel of your existing website. That way donors can be confident that their donations go to the right place.
- You should be able to accept major credit cards and eChecks. If your options are limited, some donors may be turned off.
- Online transactions should always be processed online. This means customers' credit cards are processed in real time just like any in-store transaction.
- The link to your online donation form should be IMMEDIATELY visible from your Home Page. (Do the Christmas bell-ringers hide their buckets behind the building?) This critical link should be "above the fold" (that is, should be seen as soon as the page is displayed, so there's no need to scroll to find it). In fact, all of your Web pages should link to the online donation form.
- Include suggested giving amounts. Your "suggestions" set a pace and also speed decision-making for the donor. Don't forget the "other" category.
- Include recurring gift options. One-time gifts are great, but recurring gifts contribute to positive cash flow!
- Ask "relevant" questions (and offer additional opportunities for involvement) in your online donation process. Ask: "Are you interested in volunteering with us?" "Would you like someone to call you with more information?" "Shall we contact you about the spring golf tournament?" No more than three questions in this category.
- Make reporting easy. Whatever your reporting needs, you should be able to access your data in real time and produce reports.

GiftWorks Users Report: The Zigen Fund Uses GiftWorks to Raise $100,000 for Earthquake Relief
Wujing Harrison, Executive Director of The Zigen Fund, a nonprofit which supports rural grassroots development in China, was preparing to go China on May 22, 2008. On the 12th, the deadly Sichuan earthquake occurred. By the end of the week, her board had agreed that she should create a mailing seeking funds for earthquake victims -- ASAP. Using GiftWorks™ , Wujing prepared and mailed a postcard in two days; it raised more than $100,000.
Zigen event with Beijing migrant workers. Spending more time on the quality and less time on the mechanics of communications is just one reason Wujing "raves" about GiftWorks. Joining the Zigen Fund two years ago, she found that donor data was in Excel and Access--not a form convenient for mailings. Plus, their records were far from complete.
The Zigen Fund's requirements for donor fundraising software were clear:
- Easy to use: Wujing is the only paid staff member; the software must be easy for volunteers to train on and use. GiftWorks' user-friendly interface fit the bill.
- Linked to their accounting system. (The accounting data in Excel did not meet GAAP standards.) Integrating with QuickBooks enabled record-keeping with one data entry.
- Able to target within a single household: Adult donors might live in the same household, yet they need to be tracked individually.
- Affordable: The program Wujing had used previously cost 30 times what GiftWorks costs.
"With GiftWorks, we can use our data to increase our fundraising," states Wujing. For example, they are now able to track donations that come through United Way chapters, by individual, and by campaign worker. All are linked in QuickBooks. They can then customize the appeal to donor groups in very specific ways. "With more specific groups to target, our giving has doubled!"
The Zigen Fund was established in 1988 by Chinese immigrants (engineers, teachers and professors) with the goal of improving conditions of life in rural China.
GiftWorks is excited to help them in their efforts!
